Thoughts so far:
Looks nice. I like the borderless windows
Multiple desktops work well, but not something I'd use that much
The start menu is basically a small start screen with an app list on the left
The Win8 start screen is easy to turn on
Boots slightly slower than 8.1
Seems to run slightly faster than 8.1
Windowed 'Modern UI' apps work great

Is it finally time to consider moving from Windows 7?
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:05 |

I already got rid of my 10 VM because I felt it seemed pointless to keep after messing around for a few hours. I like it a lot, but if I already have 7 on my machine; I'm not rushing to upgrade.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:06 |

So exactly the same as 8 except the start menu doesnt fill the whole screen anymore?

how long does it take to launch task manager or say right click an icon to modify? I ask as my 8.1 Chronos (i7 and 8gb of ram) takes a good 6 seconds for each task. It's the same feeling you would get if driving an m3 and it takes the engine a dozen cycles before it actually starts

I'm tempted to try this out. I've a laptop which I bought a year ago but have only used it quite literally only two dozen times. I just can't get on with Windows 8. Uuurghh.

Any new and actually useful technical features like Bitlocker in Win7 and File History in Win8?
And have they gotten rid of third party advertisements in most of the default apps?

Is it worth upgrading from 8?
Also, what laptop is that?

We're finally getting business to move from XP to 7, and a lot of them only move because their XP boxes are either suffering fatal hardware failure or they can't afford to keep fixing them. One of the reasons they don't upgrade is that they have 3rd party apps whose developers haven't moved on to newer operating systems and won't support them.
I'm not terribly looking forward to trying to move these same clients to 8 or 10. Some of thee people are befuddled by the most basic UI changes, I can't imagine what a metro interface would do.
This said, I really like 7, I personally don't use it, I'm running 8.1, but it is still a solid OS, and a nice transitions between XP and 8. I might have to spin up a 10 VM, it looks interesting.

I downloaded the .iso file already and burned on a DVD, just deciding which SSD to partition and install. I am sketchy to run it on my main rig, being afraid Steam, Spotify , and a host of other programs won't work right out of the box yet.

Why isn't there a Windows 9?

If your i7 takes that long, you might need a tune up. My i5 pulls task mangler in 8.1 almost instantaneously. That being said, my experience with 10 so far (on a VM, 1 proc, 1 core, 2GB RAM) it's just as smooth as 8.1
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:27 |

I know that struggle. We only juuuust finished moving our major client over to 7. Including a switch from Lotus Notes to MS Office.. we had training seminars for team leaders to get up to speed on the changes, hired extra resources to floor walk for the first few days of the changover to make sure everyone was happy (lots of issues with emails not being imported properly to Exchange) and put 15 more people on the helpdesk to deal with the increased number of calls.
Took about 6 months to roll it out over the 40 thousand users.

it's done it since day one, I just assumed it was because of 8. I think it may have something to do with Samsung and their legendary bloatware since I can run PayDay 2 and Bioshock infinite on high graphics just fine. It's file system and such that drags.

I think it's a marketing ploy. 8 was such a flop that they want the new one to seem very different from 8. They must have thought skipping a number will make some people think that 9 already came out but they weren't paying attention and missed it, haha
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:35 |

Really?
You're just joking, right?

9 never existed. Windows 8.1 is considered "9" but they never named it so because lots of programs see the 9 and think they're running in 98 or 95 and refuse to run. They don't bother to check for the second digit.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:43 |

I know when 10.10 beta first dropped it was nearly unusable because hardly any 3rd-party programs ran on it. Has it got better?
Also is the dark mode working now?

Oh... That's messy... Now I'm curious, how did programs distinguish between 95 and 98 back then? Or they just didn't?

I haven't run across any compatibility issues yet; I say go for it.

HP DM1 I got for free. I wouldn't upgrade yet since it's a pre-beta, especially if it's your only machine. No telling what little issues or incompatibilities might be lurking.

Not sure on if there are any major under-the-hood revisions yet.
No idea on the ads. haven't really used any of the default apps.

My dad's on Vista. He's used the same Windows installation for 7 or 8 years and it's still running just fine. I can't believe it hasn't succumbed to Windows Rot
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:47 |

It's very similar interface to Windows 7, but the under-the-hood kernel improvements result in AMAZING boot times and performance compared to 7, and there are programs (for windows 8) that disable all the tablet-y stuff if you really decide you don't like it.

Even apples own programs barely worked. Everything is good now except photoshop crashes a lot but I'll expect an update from Adobe in the near future. It's gone golden now so it ready for prime time. I don't know about dark mode.

Seriously though I am incredibly tired of idiots saying "ew windows look how awful and crashy it is why don't you use a mac" and offering absolutely no technical or compelling usability reason for switching to a Mac when Windows fits my workflow 100x better. I was forced to use a MacBook Air for 7 months and I about killed myself.

If you have 7, you need to upgrade to 8.1 or 10. The performance improvement is astounding.
Just make sure to test for program incompatibilities first; I'm not a gamer, but some of my gamer friends have had issues with certain games .
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:51 |

Yes. The interface is similar and the performance is incredibly fast in comparison

I have used 8.1 and 10. I'm not "upgrading" to 8.1 and certainly not upgrading my laptop to a beta OS.
Sticking with 7 at least until 10 is officially released.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:54 |

I haven't tried Steam, but the incredibly finicky Autodesk 3DS Max works, as does the entirety of Adobe Creative Suite 6, so I can't imagine that Steam would have an issue.
Minecraft works (first time playing it in a year and WTF IS ALL THIS SHIT?!), as does Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:56 |
|
Not sure. The problem was programs for XP or 2000 that would look for "Windows 9" and refuse to run because they were *only* for XP/2000. Lots of people still using XP-era stuff that has those sorts of checks in them (my dad uses a version of Quicken that was made for Windows 3.1 ffs)
![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:57 |

Saw that coming.

![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:58 |

Suit yourself. A couple dollars of software can take away all of the tablet stuff from Windows 8.1 and leave you with something that works basically the same as 7 but boots up and runs much faster (also the new Task Manager and file copy dialogs are a power users wet dream)

![]() 10/02/2014 at 20:59 |

Ah, makes sense, they didn't have to distinguish between both systems, they just had to know if they were running on any of them. I don't know a whole lot about computers, by the way, hence the curiosity :p

I'm so hipster I use Windows Phone because iPhones are too mainstream.
Really though, google docs? How do you deal with the lack of complex formatting options?
![]() 10/02/2014 at 21:00 |

Depends, I suppose. Due to it being technically less demanding in many ways, I'd prefer if I had it at work.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 21:01 |

Yeah I know well about Classic Shell and its other alternatives. I simply don't like 8.1 as much as 7.

It does the basics, which is pretty much all I need.... for now.
![]() 10/02/2014 at 21:10 |

Source for this as the cited reason, because I don't believe it. That's just like the whole "Y2K will end all the computers because they can't count dates past 1999" type of logic.
I thought the reason was purely marketing.

MS is never going to live down Windows ME, are they?
![]() 10/02/2014 at 22:07 |
|
nope!!
![]() 10/02/2014 at 22:19 |

Interesting. Not sure that would prompt MS to change the number, though, since they didn't do so for 2000. Besides, shit code shouldn't be allowed to run.
I still think marketing was a much larger driving force.

Haha no way! Do you use it?
![]() 10/03/2014 at 01:50 |

Oh god no. It's got Internet Explorer 5, and isn't compatible with any modern semi-secure browser, and I haven't bothered finding a linux distro that's both useful, and capable of running on 2xx MB of memory, so it's sitting around as a curiousity
![]() 10/03/2014 at 01:52 |
|
Haha got it. Imagine how quickly it would turn into a zombie if you hooked it up directly to a cable modem instead of hiding it behind NAT. A public IP address and out of date OS would lead to viruses via NetBIOS in about 5 seconds...
![]() 10/03/2014 at 02:05 |
|
That's a terrifying thought, but you gotta remember that I've got "security through obscurity" working for me now. How much stuff would still be compatible with Windows ME?

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS as my main OS, AMA.
Just kidding. (although it is my primary OS — but somehow I doubt anyone came to a Win10 article to learn about Ubuntu.)

BUT SOON
Last question. Is it stable to use as a main OS?
![]() 10/03/2014 at 07:43 |

I'm running Ubuntu on about 4 machines but not my primary.
![]() 10/03/2014 at 08:22 |
